Our approach will enable us to sustain our business in all economic regions of the world, for present and future generations, while protecting the consumer and the environment.
Recycling
O-I Asia Pacific has a long history of recycling and improving its manufacturing and associated processes to reduce the impact of its products on the waste stream and the environment and continues to be a leader in sustainable manufacturing.
Australia
National Packaging Covenant
The National Packaging Covenant is an agreement entered into by federal, state and local governments and industries involved in the packaging supply chain to manage consumer packaging waste in Australia.
The Covenant provides a framework for minimizing the environmental impact of packaging through its life cycle, from design to disposal. This collaborative approach involves all stakeholders in the supply chain from suppliers, designers, and manufacturers to wholesalers and consumers.
The 2005-2010 Covenant is an agreement between the packaging supply chain and the three spheres of government that includes targets to increase recycling, increase diversion from landfill as much as 60 per cent and to reduce energy and water use. It is based on the principles of shared responsibility through product stewardship. O-I Australia is also a contributor to the NPC Industry Transitional Arrangement Fund.
Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) Packaging Stewardship Forum
AFGC/PSF and its member companies are a leading force in the development of environmentally responsible recycling and anti-litter practices. Over the past 21 years, AFGC/PSF and its predecessors have funded over $60 million in recycling and litter prevention programs throughout Australia. O-I Australia is a founding member.
New Zealand Packaging Accord
More than 200 organizations in key sectors including steel, plastic, aluminium, glass and paper, as well as brand owners, importers and retailers have signed up to this accord. One of the key targets is to increase glass recovery to 55 per cent by 2009.
O-I New Zealand is a signatory to this accord and is achieving greater than 60 per cent recycled content for its own manufactured volume.
