Glass, the natural choice
For O-I, sustainable packaging is not just about renewable resources or greenhouse gas emissions or recycling and composting or any one specific component. It is about all of them. It's about the packages' life cycle and end of life scenarios and ultimately the impact they have on our environment, our health and our safety.
Glass packaging is sustainable packaging.
Sustainability is becoming a key lifestyle priority for consumers and impacts their attitudes towards packaging. *An A. C.Nielsen study report reveals that over half of the consumers in Europe would give up the convenient packaging for the sake of the environment. Moreover, the report reveals a consumer preference for packaging that is recyclable, biodegradable and safe when people eventually dispose of it. The report expresses the opinion that glass packaging, for example, is considered to be hygienic, inert, recyclable, tamper proof and has the potential to extend product life. And its aesthetic appeal provides positive cues about product authenticity, quality and efficacy.

For consumers it is easy to make a positive contribution to the environment simply by choosing glass. After use, they either reuse glass packaging (eg for home-made jams, candle-holders) or recycle the glass jar or bottle...

Sustainable Packaging is packaging that

  • adds economic and social value to a product in terms of its image, safety and consumer preference
  • minimizes the use of materials and energy by lightweighting and material reduction
  • is recyclable or compostable
  • is non-toxic to humans and ecosystems

Each time bottles and jars go round this cycle they generate environmental benefits:

  • 345 kwh of energy is saved for every tonne used
  • 225 kg of CO2 is saved for every tonne used
  • 1.2 tonnes of raw materials quarrying is saved for every tonne used
  • 1 tonne of landfill is saved for every tonne used
