O-I is committed to protecting the health and safety of every O-I employee in the workplace. To achieve this goal the company maintains a Corporate Health and Safety program.
Corporate Health and Safety Mission
The mission of the Corporate Health and Safety Department is to provide support to the company in all areas related to health and safety, including occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and workers' compensation administration. By providing a safe and healthful work environment, employees can focus on managing processes and products. As a result, we are able to continuously improve operations while minimizing loss - both financial and personal - to the company, its employees and their families.
Plant Responsibilities
Each facility is responsible enforcing corporate health and safety policies, which include:
- Developing and maintaining a plant policy statement regarding health and safety.
- Establishing working labor/management safety committees (where applicable).
- Creating and enforcing plant safety rules, and investigating all accidents.
- Performing planned safety inspections, and establishing a system to repair identified safety issues.
- Maintaining fire protection.
- Record keeping for OSHA.
- Administering Workers' Compensation.
To support each facility, Corporate Health and Safety provides technical health and safety service, including:
- Industrial hygiene air sampling
- Proactive response to employee concerns
- Machine guarding/process safety review
- Noise monitoring (sound pressure level surveys, octave band analysis, noise dosimetry studies, and NIOSH Method 1 evaluation of hearing protection)
- Workers' Compensation administration review
- Written compliance program development
- On-site technical assistance related to federal/state agency compliance surveys
Internal self-critical reviews are also conducted at each facility. This comprehensive approach consists of both written program and physical compliance reviews.
Safety Performance
Our safety performance is routinely evaluated by statistical process control techniques based on the use of histograms. We maintain benchmarks to chart our progress in achieving continuous safety improvement across the entire organization.
Training Programs
A major component of our comprehensive health and safety program is employee training.
O-I has dedicated a substantial, ongoing corporate investment to ensure our training program is comprehensive and up-to-date. We use state-of-the-art interactive multimedia learning centers to make training programs easily accessible to all employees. The effective implementation of these programs and practices has resulted in consistent improvement in our health and safety performance.
