O-I’s Uses Virtual Reality Training to Enhance Safety

As the leading innovatory in the glass industry, O-I leverages the latest technology to enhance sustainable work practices and employee safety. Our Global Technology team is using Virtual Reality Machine Training (VRMT) to introduce plant workers to virtual simulations of lifelike scenarios. Through VRMT, O-I employees can learn glassmaking processes without going to a factory.

“People continue to be at the center of O-I’s strategy. Introducing virtual reality will help expose individuals to fundamental process principles safely and efficiently,” explains Adam Hafer, director of the Innovation Center and Perrysburg’s O-I properties.

Instructors develop virtual training courses within the system to test critical process understanding. Trainees enter a 360° active learning environment, experiencing sights and sounds that dissolve the barrier between virtual and actual reality. Using headsets and controllers, trainees look, speak, and move about in a 3D virtual setting, interacting with simulated real-world tools, machinery, and other trainees and instructors.

“Virtual reality is one among many steps along the digital journey that will continue the transformation of O-I,” adds Hafer.
