O-I Glass is excited to announce its new badge on Untappd, the mobile app for beer lovers worldwide to connect and share their experience. The O-I badge is titled “Bottles Up!” and congratulates beer lovers for celebrating their special moments with beer in glass bottles.

At O-I Glass, we love making glass bottles because glass brings something special to the table. Glass plays with the senses on so many levels.

  • Sight: You can see your beer through the glass bottle, and you start to eagerly anticipate the experience ahead.
  • Touch: Glass is tactile. It’s smooth. It’s sturdy. It has curves and fits nicely in your hand.
  • Sound: Toasting with glass bottles is a timeless sound that we connect with celebration and friends.

Look at the craft beer movement! Beer lovers take great care to judge their beers based on aroma (smell), flavor (combination of taste and smell) and mouthfeel (texture). When you consider that beer is a beverage that is built for the senses, you immediately understand why beer and glass bottles make a lovely pair.

We also celebrate glass because it’s a sustainable packaging material. A glass bottle is made of four simple ingredients — silica sand, limestone, soda ash and recycled glass. Glass bottles are also infinitely recyclable, meaning they can be recycled again and again without losing quality. A glass jar or bottle can go from curbside recycling bin back to the store shelf as a new glass bottle in as little as 30 days. Impressive, right?

Brewers large and small have trusted their beers in glass for generations for a reason. When flavor is important — and us beer lovers know it is — glass wins.

O-I’s new Bottles Up Untappd badge celebrates all there is to love about beer in glass bottles. From Nov. 1 through January 2021, when users check into a beer from a bottle three times, they’ll earn the badge. We hope the next time you celebrate a moment, no matter how large or small, you choose glass bottles.
