A recently completely project to increase the amount of cullet at O-I’s Brampton, Ontario, plant is getting support from natural gas supplier Enbridge.

In 2020, O-I Glass invested in upgrading the cullet material handling system. Cullet is the industry term for recycled glass, and it’s one of the four ingredients in glass packaging. The more cullet glassmakers like O-I use to create new glass packaging, it lowers emissions and energy needed for manufacturing. Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity.

The upgraded cullet material handling system at Brampton allowed them to increase cullet usage, which positively impacted the plant’s energy use.

The energy efficient upgrades earned a grant from natural gas supplier Enbridge, which covered half the cost of the project.

For more than 100 years, O-I Glass has led the way to innovate glass manufacturing. O-I’s vision is to be the most sustainable manufacturer of the most sustainable rigid packaging while supporting sustainable communities where our employees live and work. The commitment to recycled materials at Brampton, and all our plants, is one way we continue to transform our process to bring our vision of a sustainable future to life.
