O-I Creates a Circular Economy at the Global Headquarters

O-I has introduced a sustainable, returnable water bottle system for their Levis Campus employees.

Specially designed O-I bottles, made of 90% recycled glass, are filled and refrigerated with filtered water and provided free of charge to campus employees. When employees are done enjoying their water, the returned bottles are washed, refilled and re-capped ready for the next person. The glass bottles can be re-used up to 30 times. The caps are also 100% recyclable. Watch the process here.

“We are passionate about our product and the wondrous benefits of glass packaging and this is a clear example of our Company providing a benefit to our employees while showcasing the superior capability of our package,” said Kurt Manz, GM, Food and NAB, Americas North. “This project started a year ago using a very small budget and after hour contributions by a number of volunteers who also share this passion in creating a circular economy and keeping glass packaging out of landfills. It’s a small start, but it’s a step down the road of living the sustainable life we believe our product so clearly exemplifies.”

Since launching the returnable glass bottle program in September, the team has processed nearly 5,700 bottles, each bottle being used/reused an average of eight times. This represents the equivalent of nearly 150 pounds of empty plastic bottles (0.4 oz each).
