V Project Connects Northwest Ohioans with COVID-19 Vaccine Resources

Scheduling a COVID-19 vaccine appointment isn’t always simple. Connecting Ohioans who need help scheduling due to lack of technology access, disability, or those who speak limited English is a high priority for the V Project, the Northwest Ohio collaborative effort working to boost vaccination rates.

O-I Glass, headquartered in Perrysburg, Ohio, is among the Toledo-area businesses and community organizations who are supporting V Project, short for “Victory Over COVID-19 Through Vaccination.” V Project’s mission is to raise vaccine awareness and access in order to reach a 70% vaccination rate in the community. The group is particularly focused on helping connect people with the vaccine, helping people get to their appointments if they don’t have transportation, and raising positive awareness through media and marketing.

In order to support those priorities, the V Project is partnering with the Lucas County Health Department and United Way to invest in the build out of the 2-1-1 call center and capability. More than 50% of all calls coming into United Way 2-1-1 are related to COVID-19 health resources, vaccines and vaccine pre-registrations. February 2021 saw over 19,000 calls into the United Way of Greater Toledo – that’s nearly triple the amount of calls to 2-1-1 during the same month in 2020.

United Way 2-1-1 is working collaboratively with the V Project assisting individuals with completing a vaccine pre-registration form or scheduling a vaccine appointment who meet the following criteria:

  • Has no access to technology
  • Has a disability that prevents them from using technology
  • Is having technical issues / having trouble locating health resources
  • Has limited English proficiency / English is not their primary language

Actively working to support the V Project through the expertise of our people, as well as funding, is one way we seek to build sustainable, resilient communities where we live and operate.

“As it has done now for over 90 years, O-I has proven again to be a leader in our community,” Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz responded after O-I offered its expertise and financial support in January 2021. “And something tells me that Michael J. Owens would be proud that the company he founded was the very first to step up financially during this time of need.”

O-I has a long history of supporting the betterment of our shared communities. Since 1937, the O-I Charitable Foundation has focused on advancing education, arts, culture, sustainability and basic human needs. The work of our Charitable Foundation is driven by our culture of giving and volunteerism by our team members—a tradition that is continued as O-I employees are actively volunteering to support V Project in its logistics and education in the area.
