O-I has reached a pivotal moment in our sustainability journey. In 2024, we achieved some of our ambitious goals. The data here reflects our achievements and demonstrates that we’re committed to a sustainable tomorrow through the power of glass.
Sustainability at O-I is about more than what we make. It’s also about how we make it through the interconnected ecosystem that involves our suppliers, our customers, our people, and the communities where we operate.
The journey to this balance —sustainability— is grounded in resilience, innovation, and the ever-present challenge to transform what we do.
Our 2024 Goal
Increase recycled content to 50% average (external by tons packed). O-I is taking a tailored approach to this across its enterprise network, as rates vary significantly by geography.
Our 2024 Performance
41% recycled content on average.
Our 2024 Goal
Target to reduce GHG emissions 25% from 2011 (scopes 1 & 2, market-based), aligned with a 2˚C climate change pathway.
Our 2024 Performance
Goal Achieved: 4,684,764 tons of CO₂e, a 30% reduction from 2017.
Our 2024 Goal
Renewable electricity is a pillar in our strategy to lower carbon emissions. Our goal is to reach 40% global renewable electricity use.
Our 2024 Performance
Goal Achieved: 51% global renewable electricity volume
Our 2024 Goal
Our goal is always zero injuries and illnesses. As we work toward that goal, we are committed to a 50% improvement of our Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) from 2019 baseline year.
Our 2024 Performance
Total Recordable Incident Rate for O-I employees was 1.48, a 48% decrease from 2019.
O-I’s climate change strategy is aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree pathway. As we transform into a more competitive, future-ready business, we’re doubling down on sustainability.
O-I is innovating to build sophisticated ecosystems that drive glass recycling and increase recycled content in our products. This is not something we can do alone. To see increases in glass recycling, capture more glass, and route it to our furnaces, there needs to be engagement across the glass value chain. We are investing to drive collaboration between stakeholders. We have created partnerships to drive recycling, reduce consumer waste, and conserve resources.
Investing in plant infrastructure to secure reliable cullet quality and supply, enabling higher recycled content
Exploring opportunities to recycle end-of-life glass products
Investment in cullet processing plants, such as Glass to Glass Denver and Portland in the U.S., O-I PROMAPI in Mexico, and Julia Vitrum in Italy
Collaborating with suppliers to improve cullet quality and increase its usability in furnaces
In 2024, over 124,000 tons of glass collected through 63 closed-loop programs
Forty-seven community collection sites, five Glass4Good™ programs
Informing policy & shaping bottle bills to include more types of glass packaging
Facilitating collaboration and open dialogue with stakeholders
O-I explores innovative strategies to reduce energy consumption in our glass-making plants. Sustainability Director Sonya Pump explains how optimizing furnace operations and adopting new technologies can lead to significant energy savings.
