O-I Partners with New Non-Profit, Glass Recycling Foundation

A new non-profit organization will focus solely on funding glass recycling initiatives. The Glass Recycling Foundation (GRF) was officially launched April 16 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, only 60 miles north of O-I’s Global Headquarters.

Jim Nordmeyer, VP, Global Sustainability represents O-I on GRF’s board and joins other industry experts in an effort to raise funds for projects that address gaps in the glass recycling supply chain across the U.S.

“This is an important milestone in the glass industry’s efforts to find solutions and ensure glass containers are made in to new glass bottles and jars, rather than ending up in landfills,” said Jim.

“I am excited to work alongside customers, haulers, processors and governments to help make the world a better place.”

GRF is working closely with the Glass Recycling Coalition (GRC), which consists of nearly 40 members of the end-to-end glass recycling value chain. Jim also plays an instrumental role with the Coalition.

GRF’s vision is to ensure all glass containers are continuously recycled to the highest and best use, maximizing economic, environmental and social benefits.

According to a 2018 study by the GRC, 93 percent of consumers and residents expect to be able to recycle their glass containers. More than 80 percent of U.S. recycling programs include glass collection options for residents. GRC notes, while many recyclers rely on export markets, the end market for recycled glass is primarily domestic.
