An O-I Timeline

The automated bottle-making machine, invented by O-I Glass, Inc. founder Michael J. Owens, not only shaped how products were packaged — the invention shaped everyday life. Machine-made glass supported safer storage and transport of food, beverages, and medicines, aligning with growing public health standards and the rise of modern packaged goods.

This timeline highlights key milestones in glass manufacturing, glass packaging and recycling, showing how the material — and the business that started the modern industry as we know it — has supported life for more than a century.

1900–1950
Making Modern Life Possible
1903
Automated bottle‑making machine introduced
Michael J. Owens puts the first fully automatic bottle‑making machine into use, replacing manual glassblowing with a mechanized process. This breakthrough makes glass packaging more consistent, accessible and widely available—and is often described as one of the most significant advances in glassmaking in over 2,000 years.
1908
Industrial scale expands
As adoption of the Owens machine accelerates, machine-made glass container production scales rapidly across the United States, increasing availability and consistency.
1913
Eliminating child labor in glass
The Owens Bottle Machine Company is commended by the National Child Labor Committee, proclaiming that the Owens machine has done more to eliminate child labor than any legislative efforts.
1920–1933
Prohibition reshapes glass demand
With the passage of the 18th Amendment, alcohol production and sale are banned in the United States, removing one of the largest end markets for glass bottles. Glass manufacturers pivot toward everyday uses, including milk bottles, food jars and medicine containers.
1929
Formation of Owens-Illinois
The merger of Owens Bottle Company and Illinois Glass Company creates a national-scale glass manufacturer, combining automation technology with a broad U.S. production network.
1933
Glass block innovation showcased at the World’s Fair
Owens-Illinois showcases glass block applications at the Chicago "Century of Progress" World’s Fair, demonstrating new architectural uses for glass.
1946
Enabling the growth of television in America
O-I acquires Kimble Glass and enables the production of television picture tubes.
1960–2000
Shaping Consumer Culture
1960s
Growth of packaged food and beverage culture
Rising consumer demand for packaged goods reinforces the role of glass packaging in how products are produced, distributed and experienced in everyday life.
1964
Colored glass innovations enable product differentiation
Advances in glass technology, including colored glass, support branding and product identity as packaging becomes a core part of consumer recognition and experience.
1983
Historical Landmark recognition
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers designates the Owens Bottle Machine as an International Historic Engineering Landmark.
2000
A glass milestone
O-I’s worldwide shipments reach approximately 100 million glass containers per day.
2010–Present
Reframing the Sustainable Future of Glass
2011
Glass Is Life® elevates awareness of material choice
O-I launches Glass is Life®, its first-ever global campaign to champion glass packaging and highlight its role in quality, health and sustainability.
