Celebrating America Recycles Day in the Glass City

Pop-Up Glass Collection Center at O-I’s Global Headquarters

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Perrysburg, OH) – Owens-Illinois, Inc. is recognizing America Recycles Day, November 15, by creating a Pop-Up Glass Packaging Collection Center at its Global Headquarters in Perrysburg, OH. America Recycles Day, a Keep America Beautiful national program, promotes environmental citizenship and taking action to improve recycling. “We take great pride in producing a product that is 100% and endlessly recyclable,” said Jim Nordmeyer, VP, Global Sustainability. “Recycled glass is a key ingredient in our process to make new containers for the world’s leading food and beverage brands. The more recycled glass we use, the less energy we need, which in turn means reduced CO2 emissions.”

Wood and Lucas County residents and employees are encouraged to bring their glass packaging between 7:15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to 1890 Wilkinson Way on Friday, November 15. O-I employees will be on hand to unload the glass containers from vehicles and place in to a 40-yard container provided by Rumpke Recycling. The collected glass will be transported to one of Rumpke’s advanced recycling facilities for sorting and cleaning. A portion of the recycled glass will then be sent to O-I’s glass manufacturing sites in Zanesville, OH and Lapel, IN to be made in to new glass packages for the wine and beer markets. Another portion of the recycled glass will be re-used in the fiberglass industry.

The following items are ACCEPTABLE for recycling:

  • Beer/wine/champagne/spirits/ Non-Alcoholic glass bottles
  • Food glass jars/containers

The items below are NOT ACCEPTABLE for recycling:

  • Windows
  • Mirrors
  • Light bulbs
  • Solar panels
  • Heat-resistant glass, ex. Pyrex
  • Drinking glasses
  • Computer/TV screens

In addition to glass recycling, O-I has introduced a sustainable, returnable water bottle system for their Levis Campus employees. Specially designed O-I bottles, made of 90% recycled glass, are filled and refrigerated with filtered water and provided free of charge to campus employees. When employees are done enjoying their water, the returned bottles are washed, refilled and re-capped ready for the next person. The glass bottles can be re-used up to 30 times. The caps are also 100% recyclable.

Since launching the returnable glass bottle program in September, the team has processed nearly 5,700 bottles, each bottle being used/reused an average of eight times. This represents the equivalent of nearly 150 pounds of empty plastic bottles (0.4 oz each).
