United Way’s mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good. Here at O-I, we believe in that mission and are engaged in various United Way campaigns throughout the year. We’re safe, responsible and active in our communities, which gives us a lot to feel good about. Here are just some examples of how O-I employees have been giving back to their communities over the past months:
In 2018, O-I Americas
Central launched their Corporate Volunteering Program in Mexico’s headquarters
and plant locations in Monterrey City. Over 500 Monterrey employees contributed
funds to support the elementary school, José Alvarado Unit 1 with over 400
students. After just a few months, they proudly raised over $14K, far exceeding
expectations, and allowing the school to address some of their most critical
matters.
O-I Monterrey employees joined parents of the school association and
volunteered to help paint the school walls. At the end of the day, the O-I
volunteers signed a t-shirt with a message to the students and teachers and
gave it to the principal as a sign of O-I’s commitment to the school and the
community. “These are the first steps of our commitment to build a better
community with the cities where O-I has a presence in Mexico, and we’re sure
that this will be a journey for a long time as part of our O-I DNA,” said
Javier Uriegas, HR Director for Americas Central.
In Brazil, Live United Day kicked off with O-I employees teaming up to make
improvements to a local community square and at an organization supported by
United Way’s Early Childhood Program. Over 365 employees donate each month to
support the childhood program and more than twenty volunteers donated their
time and talent to painting, renovating and creating playgrounds for these
children. This is the 7th year O-I Brazil has supported and
participated in United Way initiatives.
At least fifteen U.S. plants are promoting United Way giving. Whether through
holding an actual United Way campaign, introduction through new hire
orientation, or donating funds raised through a chili cook-off – O-I salaried
and hourly employees are contributing to the greater good in their communities.
O-I plant campaigns, including O-I’s Matching Gifts, raised well over $60,000
in 2018. Brockway/Crenshaw lead the way with over 230 employees contributing to
their local United Way and Muskogee employees top the chart in giving with over
$25,000 contributed through payroll deductions and the O-I Match.
In the United States, O-I
and our employees donated $907,151 to the 2017-2018 campaign. When you support
United Way you’re preparing children for school, helping individuals move out
of poverty and providing easier access to medical care. Every volunteer hour or
dollar helps make a difference in the community you live, no matter where you
live. There are several opportunities to engage and even more ways you can
contribute.
