On Global Recycling Day, O-I had the opportunity to share the importance of glass recycling with viewers of The Weather Channel.

Elizabeth Hupp, O-I Global Social Engagement Leader, spoke live during the network’s climate-focused show, Pattrn. During the segment, Elizabeth talked about how glass is 100% recyclable and infinitely recyclable. She explained that it’s important to encourage glass recycling and how O-I is building community recycling programs to support bringing cullet into our plants.

Elizabeth had the opportunity to highlight Glass4Good, a community recycling program in several of our plant communities in North America.

“It is a program designed specifically to capture glass bottles and jars from communities so that we can keep them in the glass packaging stream and ensure circularity and sustainability of the original product,” Elizabeth said.

She elaborated about how the program brings good into our plant communities through charitable donations.

“It allows O-I to give back to those communities. For every ton of recycled glass that’s captured at our Glass4Good sites, we make a monetary donation to a local non-profit that’s on the ground in those communities,” Elizabeth said.

Customers and consumers alike are asking for more recycled content in packaging. O-I is committed to an average of 50% recycled content, globally, by 2030 as part of our corporate sustainability goals. Glass recycling is a complex topic that requires collaboration across the value chain to achieve. Glass recycling programs like Glass4Good are an example of how we’re working with stakeholders to bring in more recycled glass. Learn more about Glass4Good in this new video.
